When is the best age for a newborn portrait session?
At one time I insisted they be done before the baby turned 2 weeks old due to the rapid loss of “womb memory.” However, I’ve been forced to rethink my position this year. I’ve done several newborns recently that were actually 4-6 weeks old. Sometimes the mom didn’t realize they needed to schedule so far in advance. Sometimes they scheduled in advance and either the mom or baby really didn’t feel well enough to come at the 7-10 day old mark. As a result of these “mishaps” I’ve actually come to love the sessions that have taken place closer to the 1-month mark. Mom is calmer and more adjusted to the new baby. The baby’s skin has cleared up and has lost a lot of the newborn red or yellow tones. The eyes are more focused when they’re awake.
Here’s a good example. Little Miss L was somewhere around 5 weeks old when she came for her session and I was very pleased with what we were able to capture. Don’t you agree?
I still encourage moms to schedule a tentative newborn portrait session as soon as you know your due date. The date can then be adjusted based on the actual arrival date, but planning ahead insures the photographer doesn’t overbook around your expected delivery date.
If you’re expecting, I’d love to share some information on newborn sessions with you. Please fill out the contact form by following this link: http://photographybydiannapaulk.com/contact-2/ Be sure to add your approximate due date in the “message” section.

I am currently between studios. While the plan was to move from the current location to the new one, the new location is not ready yet. So I will temporarily be without a physical studio location for a month or so. However, I will continue to accept on-location sessions. I am just moving -- not closing.
