The city of Montgomery is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery Civil Rights March in a mural on the corner of Lee and Montgomery Streets. The spot is located on the National Historic Trail of the march. Applicants from across the country submitted proposals and Sunny Paulk, a local artist, was selected to paint the mural.
Ah, did you notice we have the same last name? Yes, there is a definite connection. Sunny is my daughter and I am #oneproudmama. I have been visiting the site daily to document her work.
After numerous delays and winter weather, the project finally got underway on January 31. Here’s a recap of the first week’s work.

How exciting! Seeing Sunny work on this mural brings joy to my heart. I had the honor of teaching at CCPAC in the Visual Arts Department while Sunny was a student. Sunny was always smiling and working hard to develop her technical skills and explore creative opportunities and ventures. I am sp proud of her! Congratulations…
You Are Awesome Sunny Paulk. I can’t wait to see the final product.
I’m happy that the city of Montgomery has recognized the importance of the Civil Rights Movement with this mural. It makes it especially nice when I see my nephew Corey Spearman assisting in this great moment. The dream lives on. Congratulations.
