Days 11-20 of the 100 day “index card” challenge.

If you missed the post on the first 10 days, I’m using prints of my flower photography with an inspirational or thought provoking quote on the back. Through the magic of Photoshop I’m able to show you the front and back of the cards at the same time. Also through the magic of Photoshop I was able to hide some ink smudges from my printer that was being temperamental this week. You’ll likely observe I had problems with my pen on a few of the days, too. The one I was using ran out of ink and it took me several days of frustration to find another one that wrote the way I wanted.

While this is an index card challenge I’ve chosen to print my photos on beautiful art card stock from @redriverpaper.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

This is the only species that nests in Alabama. Males have a brilliant red throat patch and dark green back, while females are duller with a lighter green back. It has been a rainy June in Alabama and the hummingbirds seem to flock to the feeders more in the rain.

Limelight Hydrangeas

The Limelight Hydrangeas are beautiful this year. One of our bushes was so full of blooms the branches were pulled to the ground. I had to cut a bunch of them off to keep the branches from snapping. I stuck them in a dark oxide brown basket to claim them for this month’s Color Chase Challenge!

Canon 5D Mark III, Lensbaby Velvet 56, f/4, 1/80s, ISO 1000, window light camera right

Magnolia

I’ve been trying for years to find a Magnolia bloom in perfect condition to photograph. Their blooms are so delicate and temperamental! I finally found one on our tree yesterday !

Canon 5D Mark III, Lensbaby Velvet 56, f/4, 1/80s, ISO 2500, Window light camera right (rainy day so I had to push the iso way up!)

National Eat Your Vegetables Day (June 17th)

Today’s celebration is one more opportunity to remind everyone to continue with this part of a healthy diet. I have roasted carrots, potatoes, and squash on the menu tonight.

When I see the word “challenge” I have some automatic switch that turns on and makes me want to join in. Recently, I saw a 100-day index card challenge that would start on June 1. I couldn’t resist. I got out some white and colored index cards and looked at them for several days deciding what I wanted to do. I know most participants will do mixed media or small pieces of art. I love to do mixed media but just couldn’t get a good feel about spending part of 100 days with it. I kept asking myself what would be the best use of my time. What is something that wouldn’t end up unused in a basket under my desk (which is already overflowing with mixed media projects). I finally realized that I would love to spend 100 days printing one of my floral photographs and writing something inspirational or thought provoking on the back of each. A simple print is what I decided to use. Something a little artistic but not time consuming. So that’s what I did and here’s a look at my first 10 days.

They’re not printed on index cards though they do measure 4x6 inches. They’re printed on rather beautiful art paper from Red River Paper. @redriverpaper

I know a couple of the sayings are not theological sound so those of you versed in the Bible don’t get too upset. I understand that noticing the world is not the greatest gift and the point of life is not to just live it, yet stopping to notice creation and being thankful for a small, beautiful life are really good things to do.

I think when I complete the 100 days I’ll just give them away. Hopefully, they will bring beauty and encouragement to others.

June Color Chase Challenge: Dark Oxide Brown

I have lots of rusty items for the dark oxide brown challenge but am trying to think of creative ways to photograph them. This is an old rusty sundial from one of my gardens pictured here with a bloom from my Drift Rose bush.

Canon 5D Mark III, Lensbaby Velvet 56 at (I think) f/4, 1/100s, ISO 1250, window light
