Too often we gift our grandchildren with the latest toy or article of clothing and it’s broken or forgotten by the next year. While possibly not a popular choice, I wanted to do something different this year. It was largely due to my concern about the number of young people who struggle with so much emotional pain and see no way out. I wanted to give my grandchildren something tangible they could see and feel if times ever got too hard for them –something that would assure them that they are never alone in the battle and that family will always be there for them.
I have an artist friend named Aleah Goode who posts her beautiful work on Instagram. She started posting photos of a new artistic venture of making jewelry out of old silverplate. I instantly fell in love with her creations. I remembered I had a shoebox full of my mother’s old silverplate. I contacted Aleah and asked if she would make some special pieces for me. She readily agreed and I took her enough spoons to make necklaces for each granddaughter. (I’ve still got to come up with something for the grandsons!) I consulted with the parents and asked what words would be most encouraging. One suggested “loved & cherished.” The other suggested something having to do with “strong and brave.” Aleah was able to put these on the necklaces and then added the little cross. My hope is that this is a reminder that Jesus will never fail them. Strength and unconditional love ultimately come through Him.
An unexpected blessing was Aleah making necklaces out of the spoon handles for my daughter, daughters-in-law, and me. I love that the handle and spoon are parts of each other. It reminds me of how we belong together as women and family. I want my children and grandchildren to know that families really are important — that we are accountable to and can rely upon each other in good times and especially in hard times.
You can see why I was thrilled with my choice for this year’s birthdays. I hope that the day will come when the granddaughters will appreciate the significance of the gift although I pray they will never experience the despair that seems to be so epidemic.
