I had a goal to read 100 books in 2020. I didn’t make my goal but did finish 83 books.
Friends who know I love to read often ask me to recommend books to them, so I thought I’d add this post to my Journal to make it easier to share. I lean towards mysteries and historical novels. I can’t get through a book with a lot of foul language. I don’t care for romantic novels. So, from my conservative point of view here are my highest rated reads from 2020 in the order in which I read them:
- The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd
- Flight of the Sparrow by Amy Belding Brown
- Extravagant Grace
- When Time Stopped by Ariana Newman
- Dollbaby by Lara Lane McNeal
- The Murmuring of Bees by Sofia Segovia
- Finding Tess by Beth Macy
- The Mountains Sing by Nguyen Phan Que Mai
- The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate
- Before and After by Judy Christie and Lisa Wingate
- The Girl from Berlin by Ronald H. Balson
- GodPretty in the Tobacco Fields by Kim Richardson
- The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt by Andrea Bobotis
- A Time for Mercy by John Grisham
- A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
- Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
- The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom (an annual Thanksgiving Read)
- Deadly Cross by James Patterson
- All the Best People by Sonja Yoerg
- The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
Fredrik Backman quickly became my new favorite writer but when I got into his third book, Brit-Marie Was Here, I couldn’t take the language so have not gotten another one by him. That really makes me sad because he is such a good writer 🙁
These were also good reads, just not rated as the very best:
- The Secret Letter by Debbie Dix
- The House at Tyneford by Natasha Solomons
- The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimer
- Second Skin by Christian White
- The Light over London by Julia Kelly
- The Witness Wore Red by Rebecca Musser
- The Paris Secret by Lily Graham
- One Last Step by Sarah Sutton
- The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor
- The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson
- The Sisters of Glass Ferry by Kim Richardson
- Liar’s Bench by Kim Richardson
- The Taster by V. S. Alexander
- What Only We Knew by Catherine Hokin
- The Child of Auschwitz by Lily Graham
Note there are 4 books on this list by Kim Richardson. I really enjoy her writing.
I’m starting 2021 with my goal of 100 books. We shall see if I make it this year!
Two of my favorites from 2020 were “Cutting for Stone” and “the Accidental Empress”. I also loved a Time for Mercy which you mention above. Before retirement, I only read books while on vacation. I joined a book club in 2019 and have enjoyed reading more historical fiction. Prior to joining I read almost all mysteries. Thanks for posting your list.
I can’t wait to look into your suggestions! Thank you 🙂
