I was in Birmingham doing some headshots in late November and wanted to do a little exploring. Thanks to Google Maps I found I was just a short distance from Alabama Veteran’s Memorial Park. It was a beautiful fall day so I drove over and got out to explore with camera in hand.

It was just me, the park ranger, and a grounds keeper there that day. It was quiet, peaceful, and very emotive.

The Memorial consists of a courtyard area with 36 columns.
On the columns are aluminum casts of Medal of Honor citations, veterans’ stories, letters and original works of art by Alabama artists.
The Hall of Honor displays the names of Alabama’s veterans who died during active duty in the wars of the 20th and 21st centuries. The wars include WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The gratitude and respect you experience while standing among the names of over 11,000 Alabamians lost to war is astounding.

The atmosphere of the park provides such a wonderful opportunity to combine a family outing with an education opportunity. While preparing this blog post I see where they’ve designed a scavenger hunt to use while on your visit. (alabamaveterans.org). I hope many of you will take the time to plan a visit, pay respect to these Alabamians who gave all, and celebrate our democracy.

All sessions are on location by appointment only.
