Seeing my photo on the cover of River Region BOOM! magazine never gets old. For this month’s cover, I ventured to Prattville to meet and photograph Lane Easterling, a longtime Edward Jones financial planner.

BOOM! Magazine is available throughout the River Region or flip through the online version here: https://issuu.com/riverregionpublications/docs/boom_september_2026

Many thanks to Katie in the Edward Jones office for being an invaluable assistant in scheduling this shoot!

It’s the 100th day!

On June 1st this year I started a 100-day challenge to print one flower photo and write a wise or thought-provoking quote on the back.

I choose this pink zinnia for the final photo today and an appropriate quote for the back, “What a blessing it is to be tired from a pursuit of a challenge of your own choosing.”

I am tired! 100 days can seem a long time when you’re committed to doing something every single day! But it was also a blessing. I now have 100 of my favorite flower photos printed on beautiful art paper sitting on my desk. It has inspired me to continue to print flower photos I enjoy, though not on a self-imposed time table. I’m more prone to pick these up and look through them than I am to go through folders of old photos on external hard drives to view one or two.

I knew I wanted to share these when I started, but wasn’t sure how. It took me a few weeks to decide the best was on my second instagram account @2nd_cup_of_coffee. I’m on day 58 of sharing them there since I didn’t start on day 1 and will continue until they’re all posted.

I printed all the images using Red River Palo Duro Smooth 310 4×6 art paper. My understanding is that particular paper has been discontinued (thankfully, I had enough on hand to finish my project!) and they are recommending Aurora Natural 300 as a suitable alternative.

In the final analysis it was a worthwhile challenge. I’m glad I did it.

All (honest) photographers will tell you there are days when nothing seems to go right with the shoot. We just can’t get what we’ve envisioned to come to life in the camera (sans AI!). That’s how my morning started. We have the last few blooms on the Limelight Hydrangeas and I knew exactly how I wanted to photograph them. It just wasn’t coming together. I put Pandora on Today’s Christian Hits and just kept changing the pedestal, adjusting the fabric, and moving the light until ... there it was.

Canon 5D Mark III, Lensbaby Velvet 56 at f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO 160, Paul C. Buff Einstein Studio Light camera left.

August Color Chase Challenge: Faded Turquoise

I came across my mother’s button jar while looking for items to photograph for this month’s color challenge. I’d honestly forgotten I had it. It brought back a flood of memories.

Red Hibiscus

I had to water everything again this morning. The rain seems to go around us every time — like we have a dome over us. After watering the backyard I noticed the back of this red and yellow hibiscus and thought it deserved a capture.

Iphone 14 Pro Max with a good bit of editing in Photoshop. I also used AI to remove an ugly leaf and replace it with pretty ones.
