Crochet gloves were popular in the 1940s and 50s and were commonly worn to summer and daytime events like afternoon luncheons or teas, flower shows, or church. Once seated, they would have been removed and placed on the lap — never on the table as pictured here!
The cup and saucer belonged to my mother-in-law as well as the gloves. The spoon is from my silver as I’m actually not sure what became of Mrs. Paulk’s.
This is the fourth and final pair of gloves of hers I have. It has been an honor to think of her this week leading up to Mother’s Day.

Since I’ve been posting a bit about my mother-in-law this week I thought today I would share something that belonged to my mother. It’s a little broken heavily-stained teapot that I couldn’t bear to throw away because of the pretty little floral pattern on it. I used it as a vase and added a heavy texture to cover the damage and lend an artistic feel to the image. It occurs to me that adult children often need to do that for their mothers — remember the good, cover up the brokenness and stains with something beautiful, and acknowledge they probably did/are doing the best they could/can.

I’ll leave the little vase for my children to discard.

The texture is from a texture set available in my Etsy Shop. There’s link in my Instagram profile or a direct link here: https://diannapaulkprints.etsy.com/listing/799636823/jubilation-texture-set-photoshop. The files can be used as textures or overlays or printed as paper for scrapbooking or mixed media.

This is an interesting pair of gloves from my mother-in-law’s collection. Google Lens identified them as “mid-century ‘gauntlet’ or formal gloves, often paired with suits or dresses from the 1940s through the 1960s.” The three rows of raised stitching were called “points.” I could not find a matching pair in several searches, so I wondered if they may have been paired with a matching suit or dress. I imagine she would have set them out on a Saturday night getting ready for church on Sunday. Perhaps she carried the little pill box in her purse. My husband says they did not carry Bibles to church in the Methodist denomination when he was growing up. Putting them together with a Bible comes from my Baptist upbringing. However, the gloves, pill box, and little doily all came from her house.

It was a joy to meet and learn about the ministry of Debby Thomas as I photographed her for the cover of the May issue of BOOM! Magazine. Print versions are available throughout the River Region of Alabama or check out the online version here: https://issuu.com/riverregionpublications/docs/boom_may_2026

This is the second installment in my quest to photograph the vintage gloves from my mother-in-law’s items this week.
I’ll start with a disclaimer that the time period of the photos does not match that of the gloves. I was able to date the gloves to the 1950’s or 60’s. They would have been worn for a fancy occasion. When I found the photo of Mrs. Paulk dressed for “a dance on ship, orchestra and all” I decided to put them together.
Mrs. Paulk kept notes about everything, something I’ve tried to imitate as it has proved so helpful. She noted that these photos were taken while “vacationing in Atlanta, New York and Fla 1938 & 39.” She signed it with her maiden name as she didn’t get married until 1944. The photos were found in a Whitman’s Sampler box after her passing. I’ve continued to keep them there. In researching the date of the box it must have come from the 1960’s or 70’s. It has the embossed texture introduced in 1932, the robin replacing the dragon from the 40’s/50’s, and the key to the lower layer of candy introduced in the 60’s/70’s.
A lot of these pre-marriage photos and documents I’ve found reveal what a successful, well-educated person she was. She never mentioned how much she’d sacrificed of a career to be a wife and mother to two rowdy boys, but it becomes increasingly evident the more I learn about her.

I love gardenias but find them very difficult to photograph. I think that makes them a good subject for an abstract flower photo.

Prints available in my Fine Art America gallery. Link in profile or direct link here: https://dianna-paulk.pixels.com/

Canon 5D Mark IV, Lensbaby Velvet 28 + Kenko 36mm extension tube, f/4, 1/125s, ISO 800, outdoors on an overcast morning, basic editing in Lightroom, Cold Press Arctic paper texture applied in Photoshop in Soft Light mode @ 50%.

I somehow came into possession of 4 pairs of my mother-in-law’s gloves. I wanted to photograph them as a way to honor her memory in this week leading up to Mother’s Day. These gloves, the vanity tray and the piece of furniture they’re photographed on all belonged to her. I can just imagine her getting dressed to go somewhere and pulling out her gloves and pearls. She may have picked a little flower to pin on her dress. I thought of her a lot while putting together this little vignette. She was a true southern lady.
