Vegan (Dairy-Free) Hot Cocoa Mix

Food Photography & a Free Printable

December 13 is National Hot Cocoa Day.  Traditionally hot cocoa mix includes dried milk, but I was able to find a very good vegan (dairy-free) recipe on the web this week.

The recipe can be found here:  https://joyfoodsunshine.com/dairy-free-homemade-hot-chocolate-mix/

It calls for dried coconut milk.  I didn’t know such a thing existed!  I found some on Amazon (what can’t you find on Amazon!).

A few important notes:  (1) If you’re making this for a vegan you need to be sure to use powdered sugar that is labeled organic.  The US Department of Agriculture requires that sugar labeled “organic” is not filtered through bone char. You’ll need to make sure to use vegan marshmallows or whipped topping if you’re serving hot cocoa to a vegan.  (2) Until I was writing this blog post I didn’t know the difference between Hot Chocolate and Hot Cocoa.  Now I do.  Hot Cocoa is traditionally made from cocoa powder, sugar, and milk.  It’s thinner and less rich than hot chocolate which is made from melted chocolate.  This is a recipe for Hot Cocoa.  I did correct the printable labels to reflect that this is Hot Cocoa, but I’d already finished the photo shoot and just didn’t want to start over  🙁   So the photos reflect the old Hot Chocolate labels. But the labels you download will say Hot Cocoa.  (3) The first time I made this recipe I used Organic cacao nibs to replace the shaved bittersweet chocolate.  I was disappointed.  It was far too bitter for my taste.  In the second batch I used Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Mini Chips and it worked great.  (4) Obviously, if you don’t use the recipe from JoyFoodSunshine the labels won’t be of much use to you.  But this was such a great gift idea for a vegan or someone who cannot tolerate dairy I wanted to include the labels.
